Who Owns Descript? Andrew Mason and the OpenAI-Led Round

Table of Contents
Descript, Inc. is a venture-backed company Andrew Mason founded in 2017. It has raised $100 million in total. Its most recent announced round, a $50 million Series C on 15 November 2022, was an investment led by the OpenAI Startup Fund — not a takeover. Laura Burkhauser is CEO; Mason is executive chairman. Descript has not published ownership percentages. Checked 21 September 2026.
Who runs Descript now, and who founded it
Laura Burkhauser runs Descript as CEO. Descript’s own blog lists her as CEO in the byline of a company post by Burkhauser, captured 21 September 2026.
The current CEO
Andrew Mason announced the handover in his public post dated 27 August 2025. In it he named his new title as executive chairman and said he would not hold an operating role.
The founder’s role today
Mason founded Descript, Inc. in San Francisco in 2017, according to the company’s November 2022 funding release. That release also identifies him as Groupon’s co-founder. Descript’s Terms of Service list a San Francisco address for legal notices.

What Descript has said about its backers
Descript has described its funding publicly, but never its ownership split.
The Series C announcement
In Mason’s post on Descript’s blog, he announced that the OpenAI Startup Fund would lead a $50 million Series C round. The company’s release dates that announcement 15 November 2022. In the same post, Mason describes venture funding plainly: startups periodically “sell off a chunk of the company” to investors.
What Descript hasn’t disclosed
None of the Descript pages we opened on 21 September 2026 gives a stake percentage or a valuation. That covers the blog post, two company releases, and the About page. Some of the confusion is Descript’s own: the author bio on that blog post, updated 29 July 2026, still describes Mason as the company’s CEO.

Why totals differ between sites
Third-party company databases publish funding totals that don’t match Descript’s figure. We use the company’s own number and link to it.
Is Descript a public company?
Our searches on 21 September 2026 found no stock listing for Descript, Inc. Its About page names venture firms and 20 individual investors, including Naval Ravikant and Tobi Lutke.
Does OpenAI own Descript?
No. The OpenAI Startup Fund led one round, the Series C in the table above, announced 15 November 2022.
What “led the round” means
🔍 Why It Works This Way: A lead investor sets the terms of a funding round, and other investors buy in on those terms. Each investor receives shares; the company is not sold. Descript’s release names four other participants in the same round.
The release quotes Brad Lightcap, whom it identifies as OpenAI’s COO and manager of the fund.
What the record doesn’t show
Descript has not published the size of OpenAI’s stake. We found no announcement of OpenAI acquiring Descript as of 21 September 2026.
Where Descript came from and what it has bought
Two acquisitions appear in Descript’s own records.
Its founder’s earlier companies
Mason’s author bio on Descript’s blog lists him as the former founder of Detour and former co-founder of Groupon.
Lyrebird (2019)
Descript’s Research page says Lyrebird was founded in 2017 by Alexandre de Brébisson, Kundan Kumar and Jose Sotelo, and that Descript acquired it in 2019. The page presents that team as the origin of Descript’s in-house AI research.
SquadCast (2023)
Descript announced its acquisition of the remote-recording service SquadCast on 15 August 2023, in the company’s SquadCast release. The release does not state a price. It said SquadCast’s recording would be included in Descript subscriptions at no extra cost.
What an ownership change would mean for subscribers
If Descript is ever sold, your account agreement can go with it. Three public signals show when something changes:
- Descript publishes a new funding or acquisition release.
- The total on Descript’s About page moves from the figure it showed on 21 September 2026.
- The “Last Updated” date on Descript’s Terms of Service, 25 February 2025 when checked on 21 September 2026, changes.
⚠️ This Costs You: Descript’s Terms of Service (last updated 25 February 2025, retrieved 21 September 2026) allow Descript to transfer or assign the agreement without your consent. The same terms say your content is deleted if your account is terminated, and that backups are your responsibility.
