Descript refund policy, and the catch on annual plans

Descript Refund Policy guide showing which subscription charges can be refunde

Descript refunds a plan only if you cancel and request it within 48 hours of the invoice date, per its refund policy retrieved 9 September 2026. Editor seats get seven days. Top ups get nothing, including the $200 credit bundle listed on Descript’s top-up page on 9 September 2026. Cancelling mid-cycle is not prorated, so the rest of your term stays spent.

Which Descript charge are you trying to reverse

Four kinds of charge can appear on a Descript invoice, and each carries a different answer. Find yours first.

A plan charge or renewal

A Descript subscription charge for Hobbyist, Creator or Business, on monthly or annual billing. This one has the shortest window of the four. An annual renewal is a new invoice rather than a continuation, so the clock restarts with it.

A seat, a top up, or legacy hours

An added Editor seat, a top-up bundle, or add-on transcription hours on an older plan. Each follows its own rule, set out below. If you are choosing a tier rather than undoing a charge, start with what each Descript tier costs once the extras land.

What Descript refunds, and what it never refunds

Here is every refundable and non-refundable purchase type on one date.

The 48-hour plan window

Both conditions have to be met. Descript’s published policy, retrieved 9 September 2026, requires the plan to be cancelled and the refund requested inside the window.

The purchases with no window at all

๐Ÿ’ต Verified: Top-up purchases are final and non-refundable once added to your account โ€” Descript’s refund policy page, retrieved 9 September 2026.

Why the window usually closes before you notice

Three documented mechanisms consume the 48 hours, and none of them require you to do anything wrong.

The clock starts at the invoice, not at the discovery

The billing cycle decides when the window opens. An annual renewal charged on a card you rarely check can be two days old by the time the statement arrives, which is the whole window gone before you have seen the amount.

The Descript refund window begins with the invoice date, making the 48-hour deadline important to watch.

โš ๏ธ This Costs You: Neither Descript’s refund policy page nor its Terms of Service, retrieved 9 September 2026, sets out a renewal-reminder obligation. The Terms of Service, last updated 25 February 2025, contains no billing, fees, refund or automatic-renewal section at all โ€” the 48-hour term exists only as help-centre policy, which can be revised without a contract notice.

The blockers that eat the window

A past-due account or a failed payment blocks plan changes until the payment is resolved. Since cancellation is a precondition of the refund, that blocker can run out the clock on its own. Descript support also processes cancellation requests only from the drive owner’s email address.

What missing the window actually costs

One annual seat is the number most readers need, and it is larger than the plan card suggests.

A single annual seat

Creator is listed at $24 per person per month on annual billing, on Descript’s pricing page retrieved 9 September 2026. Twelve months at that rate is $288 per seat, charged up front. That total is our arithmetic on Descript’s published per-month annual rate; Descript does not publish an annual figure.

Business is listed at $50 per person per month on the same page and date, which works out to $600 per seat by the same calculation.

Where the number goes from here

๐Ÿ” Why It Works This Way: Annual billing charges the full term on day one, so the refund window covers roughly 0.5% of the period you have paid for. The monthly rate costs more per month but caps a mistake at one month.

Seat count multiplies all of this, and the seat maths is set out in full in what each Descript seat costs.

How the rules change by what you bought

Money moving toward a higher tier is prorated; money moving away from one is not.

Upgrades prorate, downgrades don’t

Upgrading from Hobbyist to Creator or Business applies immediately, with proration for the unused Hobbyist time, per Descript’s refund policy retrieved 9 September 2026. Downgrading to a lower tier or to Free is scheduled for the end of the current billing period with no proration. Changing your billing cycle mid-term works the same way as a downgrade.

Seats, top ups and legacy hours

A top-up balance survives cancellation but cannot be spent on Free, and its original twelve-month expiry keeps running. Bundle rates are set out in the full Descript top-up cost. Leaving a legacy plan is irreversible, and unused hours on those legacy and sunset plans did not carry across at migration.

How to ask for the refund, in the right order

Cancelling does not trigger a refund on its own, and a request without a cancellation does not qualify.

Inside the window: cancel, then request

  1. Cancel the plan first. Cancelling is a downgrade to Free, done from the Plan tab in App Settings, and the full cancellation walkthrough covers the export steps to take before you do it.
  2. Submit a support request from the email on the Descript account, per the cancellation guide retrieved 9 September 2026. If a request already exists, reply to that thread confirming you want a refund.

Follow the correct sequence: cancel the plan first, then submit the refund request.

Outside it: stop the next one

โœ… Do This: Cancel now anyway. The plan runs to the end of the term you already paid for, and cancelling stops the next invoice rather than refunding this one. Note the renewal date somewhere you will actually see it.

We have not verified whether consumer-protection law where you live grants rights beyond this policy, and this is not legal advice.

๐Ÿงพ Not Tested: We hold no paid Descript account, so we could not observe an invoice, submit a refund request, or measure how long one takes to answer. Everything above comes from Descript’s published pages, captured 9 September 2026.

Descript refund questions, answered

1. Does Descript refund annual plans?

Yes, on the same terms as monthly: cancel and request within 48 hours of the invoice date, verified 9 September 2026.

2. Is a Descript cancellation prorated?

No. Descript’s refund policy, retrieved 9 September 2026, states cancellations are not prorated and the plan runs to the term’s end.

3. Are Descript top ups refundable?

No. Top-up purchases are final and non-refundable once added to your account, per Descript’s refund policy retrieved 9 September 2026.

4. How long do I have to request a Descript refund?

Forty-eight hours from the invoice date on a plan, and the cancellation has to happen inside that window too, verified 9 September 2026.

5. Can I get a Descript editor seat refunded?

Yes, within seven days of that seat’s invoice date, and only the drive owner can request it, verified 9 September 2026.

6. What happens to my top-up balance if I cancel Descript?

It is preserved but unusable on Free, and the original twelve-month expiry keeps running, per Descript’s cancellation guide retrieved 9 September 2026.

7. Why can’t I change my Descript plan right now?

A past-due account or a failed payment blocks plan changes until the payment is resolved, per Descript’s cancellation guide retrieved 9 September 2026.

8. Who has to submit the Descript cancellation request?

The drive owner. Descript support processes cancellation requests only from the drive owner’s email address, per its guide retrieved 9 September 2026.

9. Can I return to my Descript legacy plan?

No. Leaving a legacy plan is irreversible, per Descript’s cancellation guide retrieved 9 September 2026.

The short version

Check your invoice date before anything else, because it decides whether you have a case or a cancellation. If you are inside the window, cancel and then write to support. If you are outside it, cancel anyway and put the next renewal date in your calendar โ€” that is the charge you can still control.
