Descript student discount, and why the $5 figure is wrong

Table of Contents
Descript’s student discount is its Education/Nonprofit plan: $8 per editor a month billed annually, or $12 paid monthly, per Descript’s help centre on 11 September 2026 — not the $5 still quoted on coupon sites. That is half the Hobbyist rate, with Hobbyist’s allowances. It is the only discounted plan: Creator and Business carry no education price, and the plan cannot buy top-ups.
Who qualifies for Descript’s education discount
Descript opens its Non-profit / Education plan to two groups, per its help centre retrieved 11 September 2026.

Students, educators and non-profits
Students, educators and administrators at accredited institutions qualify, as do non-profits with 501(c)(3) or equivalent status. “Equivalent” lets a charity outside the US apply; Descript publishes no country list.
Where the $5 figure comes from
Coupon pages observed on 11 September 2026 quote $5 alongside a 4-hour monthly transcription limit. Four hours is what Descript’s legacy and sunset plan guide lists for EDU/NFP on its retired plans, retrieved the same day.
We hold no first-party capture of a $5 price, so we cannot confirm Descript ever charged it. The retired plans are covered in Descript’s documented price history.
What the Descript education plan costs
On annual billing the EDU/NFP plan is $8 per editor a month against Hobbyist’s $16, verified 11 September 2026 against Descript’s pricing page.

Annual against monthly
| Plan | Billed annually | Billed monthly | Who hits this |
|---|---|---|---|
| EDU/NFP | $8/mo · $96/yr (11 Sept 2026) | $12/mo · $144/yr (11 Sept 2026) | Approved applicants |
| Hobbyist | $16/mo · $192/yr (11 Sept 2026) | $24/mo · $288/yr (11 Sept 2026) | Everyone else |
| Creator | $24/mo · $288/yr (11 Sept 2026) | $35/mo · $420/yr (11 Sept 2026) | Past the Hobbyist allowance |
Prices are per editor, in US dollars. Yearly figures are App Compare HQ’s arithmetic (monthly rate × 12); Descript publishes monthly rates only.

What a year costs up front
The annual EDU rate is one up-front charge: Descript bills at the start of the cycle, per its billing guide retrieved 11 September 2026. By our arithmetic, paying monthly costs $48 more a year at rates verified 11 September 2026. How both meters work across tiers is in what every Descript tier costs once the meters run.
What the EDU/NFP plan includes, and what it doesn’t
The plan carries every Hobbyist feature, per Descript’s help centre retrieved 11 September 2026.

The Hobbyist allowance, at half price
💵 Verified: 600 media minutes and 400 AI credits a month on EDU/NFP — Descript’s legacy and sunset plan guide, retrieved 11 September 2026.
The pricing page adds 1080p export and 100 GB of cloud storage, and the legacy and sunset guide says unused minutes do not roll over, both retrieved 11 September 2026.
No top-ups and no discount above Hobbyist
Top-ups are sold only on Creator and Business, and EDU/NFP is Descript’s only discounted plan, both per Descript’s pages retrieved 11 September 2026. When a month’s allowance runs out, this plan cannot buy more.
The seat-count contradiction
Descript’s help article lets eligible teams subscribe and set an Editor seat count. Its pricing page lists Hobbyist at one seat, and the same article sends anyone needing more seats to Creator or Business, all retrieved 11 September 2026. Confirm seats with Descript before paying for more than one.
The catch: a year up front and a 48-hour refund window
Descript refunds a plan only if it is cancelled and the refund requested within 48 hours of the invoice date, per its refund policy retrieved 11 September 2026.
Charged a year up front
⚠️ This Costs You: The full-year charge in the table above lands on day one, with the same refund window a monthly payer gets. After that, cancelling is not prorated and the plan runs to the end of the term, per the same policy retrieved 11 September 2026.
Unsure? Pay monthly first. Other charges are in each Descript refund window, charge by charge.
What Descript doesn’t publish about eligibility
Descript’s help article, checked 11 September 2026, gives no approval timeframe, no re-verification schedule, and nothing on graduating or losing charitable status. We could not retrieve the application form’s fields that day, so we do not list the proof it asks for.
When the discount stops being the cheapest option
Per media hour used in full, annual EDU/NFP and annual Creator cost the same, $0.80, on rates verified 11 September 2026.
What an hour costs on each plan
| Plan and billing | Rate per editor | Media hours/month | Per media hour | Who hits this |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EDU/NFP, annual | $8/mo (11 Sept 2026) | 10 | $0.80 | Fits the allowance |
| Hobbyist, annual | $16/mo (11 Sept 2026) | 10 | $1.60 | Not eligible |
| Creator, annual | $24/mo (11 Sept 2026) | 30 | $0.80 | Outgrew the allowance |
Per-hour cost is App Compare HQ’s arithmetic, rate divided by hours from Descript’s pricing page. Per AI credit, EDU is cheaper: 2 cents against Creator’s 3, from 400 and 800 monthly credits on 11 September 2026.
🔍 Why It Works This Way: The discount halves the price of the Hobbyist allowance without enlarging it, so an hour costs no less than on Creator.

The jump to Creator at full price
If your months regularly exceed the allowance above, the discount ends. This plan cannot buy what a top-up costs on the plans that can buy one, so the next step is Creator at three times the annual EDU rate. Occasional editors should check what the Free plan still covers first.
How to apply and switch your plan
You need a payment method on file to apply, though Descript says it is not charged until you switch, per its help centre retrieved 11 September 2026.
The three-step application
- Create a free Descript account with your school or non-profit email.
- Add a payment method.
- Submit Descript’s education and non-profit application form; Descript replies by email.
Switching your drive after approval
Per the same article: open App Settings, go to the Plan tab, choose Change plan, pick EDU/NFP from the plan dropdown, set seats, and save.
If you’re still on a Legacy plan
✅ Do This: Check the plan name on the Plan tab first. If it says Legacy, switching is permanent — Descript’s cancel and downgrade guide, retrieved 11 September 2026, says you cannot return once you leave.
🧾 Not Tested: We did not open a Descript account or apply, so we have not seen the plan picker, an approval email or an invoice. Every figure comes from Descript’s public pages, captured 11 September 2026.
