Descript free vs paid, and what stays locked on the free plan

Table of Contents
Descript’s Free plan gives 60 media minutes a month, 5 GB of storage and a 1 GB ceiling on any single file, per Descript’s pricing page on 7 September 2026. Most people hit the export gate before any of those: Free caps video at 720p and watermarks it. The limit you hit first decides which tier is worth paying for.
Which limit did you actually hit?
Five separate limits sit on the free plan, and they stop you in different ways.
Volume, or the handover?
Two of the five are volume limits: the monthly media allowance and cloud storage. The other three block the work itself โ export quality, single-file size, and what you can pass to another editor. Volume limits reset each month; the other three never do.
If your plan is Legacy or Sunset
Descript still runs older plan generations under those labels, and their allowances work on a different model. Nothing on this page applies to them โ the price increase article covers what moved and when.
What the free plan actually includes
Every figure here comes from Descript’s pricing page, retrieved 7 September 2026.
| Free plan limit | What you get | Verified |
|---|---|---|
| Media minutes | 60 per month | 7 Sept 2026 |
| Cloud storage | 5 GB | 7 Sept 2026 |
| Editor seats | 1 | 7 Sept 2026 |
| Largest single file | 1 GB, up to 4K, up to 150 mbps | 7 Sept 2026 |
| Recording session hours | 2 per drive, reset period not stated | 7 Sept 2026 |
| Stock library | First 5 search results only | 7 Sept 2026 |
| Video export | 720p, watermarked | 7 Sept 2026 |

What isn’t gated
Three things competitors routinely list as paid-only are on Free: multitrack transcription, detection of eight or more speakers, and unlimited projects. Transcription covers 25 languages on every tier, Free included.
The two limits nobody publishes
The single-file ceiling is the one that catches people, because it blocks an upload regardless of how much monthly allowance is left. Recording session hours are the other, and Descript’s own table is ambiguous: Free shows two hours per drive against five hours a month on Hobbyist, with no reset period given for Free. We have asked Descript and will update this section when we have an answer.
The order the limits arrive
For most people the limits arrive in a fixed sequence, and it is not the order Descript’s comparison table lists them in.
The export gate comes first
The watermark blocks the first file you intend to publish, which usually happens in week one. It is a gate rather than a meter, so waiting for the month to turn does nothing.
The meter comes second
The media allowance counts what you bring in, not what you publish. A 45-minute interview delivered as two files spends more than a full month’s allowance before you cut a word โ our pillar sets out exactly what the meter counts.
Storage rarely arrives at all
The storage ceiling is generous relative to the monthly allowance, so the meter almost always binds first. That order flips only if you keep every raw upload.

๐ Why It Works This Way: The meter charges on ingest and the storage cap charges on what you keep. Delete raw files after an export and storage stops mattering โ the meter has already been spent either way.
The credit question Descript answers twice
Descript’s pricing page and its usage documentation describe the free plan’s AI credits differently, and both pages were retrieved 7 September 2026.
What each page says
The pricing comparison table lists the Free tier at 100 AI credits, marked one-time. Descript’s help centre article on media minutes and AI credits states that every plan comes with a monthly allowance of each currency, retrieved the same day.

What we are not doing
We are not averaging these and not picking the friendlier reading. The difference decides whether a free user gets 100 credits once or 100 every month, and only Descript can settle it.
โ Do This: Open the Usage tab in App Settings on the first of a new month and read your credit balance. Descript documents that tab as where usage is tracked, and it is the only answer specific to your account.
โ ๏ธ This Costs You: If the credits are one-time, every AI tool on Free is a single trial rather than a monthly ration. Spend them on the two features your decision actually turns on, not on the first one you click.
What the free plan can’t hand over
Four export capabilities are switched off on Free, and each blocks passing work to someone else rather than making it. All verified 7 September 2026.
The web link has a duration ceiling
A shared web link tops out at one hour of video on Free. Longer pieces have to be split or exported locally.
No batch export, no timeline export
Files come out one at a time. Timeline export to Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Pro Tools, Logic, Audition, Samplitude and Reaper starts at Creator, so a free project cannot be finished in another application.
Fonts and formats
Custom font upload and advanced media formats are both off on Free.
โ ๏ธ This Costs You: If your workflow ends in another editor, the free plan is not a trial of that workflow. Nothing built on Free leaves as a timeline โ only as a finished 720p file.
Which upgrade clears your limit
The right tier is the cheapest one that clears the limit you actually hit. Both rates are per person, per month, from Descript’s pricing page on 7 September 2026.

| Your limit | Cheapest tier | Annual | Monthly | Verified |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Watermark, or you need 1080p | Hobbyist | $16 | $24 | 7 Sept 2026 |
| 4K, batch export, timeline export, custom fonts | Creator | $24 | $35 | 7 Sept 2026 |
| Running out of media minutes | Creator | $24 | $35 | 7 Sept 2026 |
๐๏ธ Pricing verified 7 September 2026. Software pricing changes frequently โ confirm on the vendor’s site before purchasing.
Why the meter row says Creator
Hobbyist raises the allowance but cannot buy overflow โ only Creator and Business can, per Descript’s top-ups article retrieved 7 September 2026. Our top-up article prices every bundle.
Going back is possible
Cancelling returns the drive to Free at the end of the paid term and projects stay accessible, per Descript’s cancel and downgrade guide retrieved 7 September 2026. Descript’s pages do not state what happens to stored content above the free ceiling after that drop, and we have asked.
๐งพ Not Tested: We did not open a Descript account, free or paid. Every limit, gate and price above comes from Descript’s public pricing page and help centre, captured 7 September 2026. Nothing here describes using the software, and no interface screenshot on this page was taken from a logged-in session.

Yes, at the end of your paid term. Existing projects stay accessible, per Descript’s downgrade guide retrieved 7 September 2026.
10. Does free plan storage force an upgrade?
Rarely. The monthly media meter almost always runs out first, given how the two allowances are sized.
The short version
The free plan stops being enough at the first file you intend to publish, not at the first meter you empty. Match the tier to the limit blocking you: the watermark is the cheap fix, and anything involving another editor is not.
