The Best Editor for Weekly Podcasters Depends on Three Limits

Table of Contents
For a weekly one-hour show, Descript’s Hobbyist plan ($16 a month billed annually or $24 monthly, per Descript’s pricing page on 26 September 2026) is the lowest-priced paid plan we compared. It can’t be topped up, and its 5 remote-recording hours a month cover about 69 minutes per weekly episode. Longer episodes, or cleanup on separate guest tracks, point to Creator.
What a weekly schedule uses up each month
A weekly show draws on three separate allowances, and plan pages list each one as a monthly total.
Recording time, editing time and AI cleanup
Per Descript’s help centre on 26 September 2026:
- Media minutes are used whenever you upload or record audio or video in Descript, and unused minutes don’t roll over to the next month (how Descript tracks media minutes and AI credits).
- AI credits pay for tools such as Studio Sound and filler-word removal.
- Recording session hours separately cap how long you can record in Descript’s Rooms each month.
If you’re unsure what triggers a charge, see what counts toward Descript’s media minutes.

Why 4.33 episodes, not 4
Fifty-two episodes a year divided by 12 months is 4.33 episodes a month. Every calculation below uses 4.33, because a plan sized for exactly four episodes runs short in months with five release days.

The editors worth pricing for a weekly show
Two paid editors meter a weekly show in ways that change the answer: Descript and Riverside.
Descript: charges by media hours and AI credits
Descript prices each plan per person per month, and each plan includes a fixed monthly pool of media hours and AI credits (Descript’s pricing page, retrieved 26 September 2026). Recording in Rooms draws on its own monthly session-hour limit, which Section 4 turns into a per-episode ceiling.
Riverside: charges by separate-track downloads
Riverside says recording itself is unlimited on paid plans, and Pro caps downloads of separate per-participant tracks at 15 hours a month (Riverside’s pricing page, retrieved 26 September 2026). Its help centre adds that the number of participants doesn’t change the hours used — a one-hour, three-person session counts as one hour (Riverside’s download-hours article, retrieved 26 September 2026). The comparison table on the same pricing page showed 5 hours for Pro when we captured it, which conflicts with the plan card and FAQ, so confirm the figure at checkout.
For the full feature-by-feature matchup, see our Descript vs Riverside comparison. We left out Alitu because its own pricing pages showed conflicting plan prices on 26 September 2026.
What each plan costs per weekly episode
Descript’s Hobbyist plan billed annually works out to $3.69 per weekly episode — our calculation from Descript’s list price on 26 September 2026. All figures are in USD before tax, for one person.

Annual vs monthly over 52 episodes
On Hobbyist, paying monthly costs 50% more over a year than paying annually: $288 against $192, per Descript’s list prices on 26 September 2026. Descript’s pricing page shows per-month rates only. Our annual totals are 12 × the monthly rate, so confirm the amount you’re charged at checkout.
The $288 tie
Three options cost the same $288 a year on 26 September 2026: Hobbyist billed monthly, Creator billed annually, and Riverside Pro billed annually. At a tie, limits decide the choice, not price. For fees that sit on top of the list price, see the extra costs behind each Descript tier.
Where the cheapest plan runs out on a weekly show
If you record guests in Descript’s Rooms, Hobbyist‘s 5 recording-session hours a month cover about 69 minutes per weekly episode (our calculation: 300 minutes ÷ 4.33), per Descript’s pricing page on 26 September 2026. On the same page, Creator’s 15 hours cover about 207 minutes.
Room recording
Descript’s help centre says a Rooms recording uses media minutes for the session’s length only, not once per participant (Descript help, 26 September 2026).
Separate guest tracks and AI cleanup
Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words each cost at most 30 AI credits per file per application (Descript help, 26 September 2026). Run both on one mixed file each week and the ceiling is about 260 credits a month, inside Hobbyist’s 400. If each track is processed as its own file, that ceiling roughly doubles to about 520.
Descript’s documentation doesn’t say plainly whether two tracks of the same hour use one hour of media minutes or two. Check your Usage tab after your first multi-file upload, before you commit to a plan.
No top-ups below Creator
Top-ups are sold only on Creator and Business (Descript’s top-ups article, 26 September 2026). Bundle prices are covered in what Descript top-ups cost.
⚠️ This Costs You: On Hobbyist there’s no way to buy more mid-month. Running out means waiting for renewal or upgrading your plan.
Finishing in a DAW
Descript’s pricing page, on 26 September 2026, excludes timeline export to Audition, Pro Tools, Logic and Reaper from Hobbyist and includes it on Creator.
Which editor fits your weekly show
Match the plan to how you record, not to the feature list.
Solo episodes
Hobbyist fits a solo show that uploads one mixed file per episode and stays within the Rooms ceiling in Section 4.
Remote-guest interviews
Longer interview shows, or shows that clean each guest track separately, belong on Creator. Consider Riverside Pro instead when recording, not editing, is the constraint, since Section 2 explains its recording is unlimited.
Shows finished in Audition or Reaper
Choose Creator, because Hobbyist can’t export a timeline. If you have no budget at all, start with our free Descript alternatives guide.
What you lose if you switch editors mid-season
A mid-cycle switch forfeits whatever allowance is left that month.
Unused minutes don’t carry over
Descript’s unused media minutes and AI credits don’t roll over to the next billing cycle, per its help centre on 26 September 2026.
Top-ups are non-refundable
Descript top-ups can’t be refunded and expire 12 months after purchase (Descript help, 26 September 2026).
✅ Do This: Time any switch to your renewal date, and don’t buy a top-up in a month you plan to leave.
🧾 Not Tested: We did not record or edit an episode in Descript or Riverside. Everything above comes from both vendors’ public pricing and help pages, captured 26 September 2026. We couldn’t confirm first-hand how separate tracks are billed.
