Did Descript Get Worse, or Did Its Billing Change?

Descript usage system showing separate media minutes and AI credits meters

What changed is how Descript meters use. As of 23 September 2026, every current plan draws on two separate allowances: media minutes for every file uploaded or recorded, and AI credits for tools like Studio Sound. By our calculation from Descript’s rules, a one-hour weekly show uploaded as three files needs 720 minutes in a four-episode month โ€” past Hobbyist’s 600, which cannot be topped up.

What actually changed in Descript’s plans

Descript replaced its old usage system with two pools. Its notes on Legacy and Sunset plans, retrieved 23 September 2026, say media minutes and AI credits replaced transcription hours and separate per-tool AI allocations.

From transcription hours to two pools

That same page lists “Included AI uses” as Unlimited on the old Creator and Business plans. It lists 20 uses a month on legacy Hobbyist (retrieved 23 September 2026). For Creator and Business subscribers, AI use moved from an uncapped allowance to a fixed monthly pool.

Descript legacy transcription hours changing to media minutes and AI credits
Older Descript plan usage centered on transcription hours and separate AI allowances; current plans use media minutes and AI credits.

If you were on an older plan

Descript says unmigrated subscribers moved automatically on their next billing date after 17 November 2025. It also says most customers would not see a price change, though some could. Whether yours did is covered in what changed in Descript’s prices.

If you mean the editor, not the bill

This page covers billing only. We have not tested the editor, so it makes no claim about how the editor performs.

Descript’s plans on both meters

Every paid Descript plan carries a price, a media-minute allowance and an AI-credit allowance, all per editor. Figures come from Descript’s pricing page, and the “who it suits” column comes from Descript’s legacy-plan article.

Monthly vs annual price

On 23 September 2026, the pricing page advertised annual billing savings of up to 35%. Calculated from the table above, the actual savings are 33% on Hobbyist, 31% on Creator and 23% on Business. The page does not show which plan reaches 35%.

What “per editor” means for teams

Allowances are per editor seat, and each seat adds to a shared pool for the whole Drive (usage help article, 23 September 2026). Editors draw from that pool; Viewers cannot. For what each tier costs beyond the sticker price, see the full Descript cost breakdown.

What uses media minutes and what uses AI credits

Uploads, recordings and still images use media minutes; AI tools use AI credits. Both rules below come from Descript’s usage help article, retrieved 23 September 2026.

Every upload counts

Minutes draw down when you upload or record, and each still image counts as one second. The full list is in what counts toward Descript media minutes.

Rooms counts once, not per guest

A one-hour Rooms session with five participants uses 60 minutes, not 300.

AI tools, including just chatting

Every message to Underlord uses credits, even when no tool runs. Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words cost at most 30 credits per file application. Descript says of Underlord, “We know this makes it harder to estimate credit costs than a flat rate.”

๐Ÿ” Why It Works This Way: Media minutes measure what goes into Descript, not what you publish. Three raw files for one finished episode are three draws on the meter.

How a weekly podcast outgrows Hobbyist

A weekly one-hour show fits Hobbyist or breaks it depending on how many files each episode becomes. The table below is our calculation from Descript’s published rules and the plan table above, as of 23 September 2026. It is not measured usage.

One Rooms session per episode60 ร— 4 = 240240 if processed as one fileWithin; uses 4 of 5 Rooms hours

Three files per episode

A host track, a guest track and a video file, each 60 minutes long, need 720 minutes a month. That is more than Hobbyist’s allowance.

Same show recorded in Rooms

The Rooms route needs 240 minutes. Hobbyist also caps Rooms at 5 recording hours per Drive per month (pricing page, 23 September 2026), so a five-episode month uses the whole allowance.

The AI-credit ceiling

The credit figures are maximums, because 30 is a cap, not a fixed charge. Descript’s own guidance places weekly production on Creator.

โš ๏ธ This Costs You: Hobbyist has no top-ups. Running out mid-month leaves two options: wait for renewal, or upgrade and carry the minutes you’ve already used into the new plan’s limits.

Rollover, top-ups and upgrade rules

Hobbyist cannot buy extra usage. Top-ups are sold only on Creator and Business, per Descript’s top-ups article, retrieved 23 September 2026.

Top-ups: Creator and Business only

Top-ups are shared across the Drive and used only after the monthly allowance runs out. They expire 12 months after purchase and are non-refundable. Descript’s own advice is that if you top up regularly, upgrading is likely cheaper.

๐Ÿ’ต Verified: The smallest bundles are 350 AI credits for $35.00 and 5 media hours for $25.00 โ€” Descript top-ups help article, retrieved 23 September 2026. The full breakdown is in what Descript top-ups cost.

Nothing rolls over

Monthly allowances reset at renewal, and unused minutes and credits are lost (usage article, 23 September 2026).

Upgrading doesn’t reset usage

Usage you have already spent counts toward the new plan’s limits, per Descript’s upgrade article (23 September 2026). Upgrades are prorated with credit for unused time. Downgrades take effect at the end of the billing cycle.

Stay, restructure, upgrade or cancel

Change your file count before you change your plan.

Cut files before you cut plans

If each episode becomes several uploads, merge them into one file first, or record in Rooms, as the table above shows. Descript’s usage article says your running totals are shown in the Usage tab of App settings.

When upgrading is the cheaper fix

If you are still over after restructuring, Descript’s own advice applies: regular top-ups mean it is time to upgrade. On Hobbyist, upgrading is the only way to get more usage mid-month.

Cancelling

Descript’s pricing FAQ says you cancel from your subscription page. Before you do, export your transcripts and projects.

โœ… Do This: Before your next renewal, multiply the files per episode by episode length and by episodes per month. Compare the result with your plan’s minutes in the table above.

๐Ÿงพ Not Tested: We have no logged-in Descript usage on record for this article. Credit costs for Underlord requests and your actual minute draw are therefore calculated from Descript’s documentation, not observed.

No. Unused monthly AI credits and media minutes reset at renewal. Top-ups last 12 months, per Descript on 23 September 2026.

3. Does Rooms use media minutes per participant?

No. Rooms uses media minutes for the session length only, so a one-hour, five-person session uses 60 minutes.

4. Can Descript Hobbyist buy top-ups?

No. As of 23 September 2026, Descript sells top-ups only on Creator and Business plans.

5. Does chatting with Underlord use AI credits?

Yes. Every Underlord message uses AI credits, even when no editing tool runs, according to Descript’s help center.

6. Does usage reset when I upgrade Descript?

No. Usage already spent counts toward the new plan’s limits, though Descript prorates the upgrade charge.

7. How much is Descript’s annual discount?

Descript advertises up to 35% off. From its listed prices on 23 September 2026, the savings work out to 23โ€“33%.

8. Do still images use Descript media minutes?

Yes. Each still image counts as one second of media minutes, per Descript’s usage documentation.

9. How do I cancel Descript?

Cancel from your Descript subscription page, as its pricing FAQ describes. Export your transcripts and projects first.

The bottom line

Descript now bills on two meters, and uploads that turn one episode into several files use up the minutes fastest. Count your files before you change plans, upgrade only if restructuring still doesn’t fit, and export before leaving if neither works.
