Descript out of credits mid-project and your real options

Illustration showing separate Descript AI credits and media minutes balances

If Descript says you’re out of AI credits, your balance will not refill until your billing cycle renews. Top-ups start at $35.00 for 350 credits and are sold only on Creator and Business, per Descript’s help centre retrieved 19 September 2026. Upgrading does not reset the credits you have already spent this cycle.

Which balance actually ran out

Descript meters two balances separately, and the right fix depends on which one emptied. AI credits cover generative work โ€” Underlord, Studio Sound, Eye Contact, AI speech and generated media. Media minutes cover uploads and recordings.

Both reset, neither carries over

AI credits and media minutes are separate resource pools with different functions.

Your allowance refills when the subscription renews, and unused credits do not roll over into the next cycle, per Descript’s usage documentation retrieved 19 September 2026. If an import or a recording was blocked rather than an AI tool, you hit the other meter โ€” what counts as a media minute covers that case, and what actually burns credits covers this one.

What the limit message leaves out

Descript documents that a message appears when you have reached the limit. It does not say whether your plan can buy more, or which route out costs least. Descript’s published documentation also does not state whether an action already running finishes at the moment the balance empties, so this article does not claim it either way.

Your three options, and what each one commits you to

There are exactly three routes out of an empty credit balance, and they differ less on price than on what they lock you into.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Pricing verified 19 September 2026. Software pricing changes frequently โ€” confirm on the vendor’s site before purchasing.

When AI credits are empty, the main choices are a top-up, an eligible upgrade, or waiting for renewal.

Bundles are sold in three sizes and get cheaper per credit as they get larger; the full table and the per-credit maths are in our top-up cost breakdown. Two conditions matter more than the price: bundles are spent only after your monthly allowance is exhausted, and they are non-refundable, per Descript’s top-ups documentation retrieved 19 September 2026.

Two paid plans cannot buy a top-up at all

Option one is closed to more people than the vendor’s purchase flow suggests. Hobbyist is a paid plan, and it cannot buy AI credit top-ups.

What that means if you’re on Hobbyist

Your only paid route is a tier upgrade, which is why the next section matters more to you than to anyone else. What the free and paid tiers actually include sets out the rest of the difference.

Upgrading does not reset what you’ve already spent

An upgrade does not hand you a clean allowance. Usage you have already accumulated in the current billing cycle counts against the new plan’s limits, per Descript’s upgrade documentation retrieved 19 September 2026.

โš ๏ธ This Costs You: If you have spent your full monthly allowance before upgrading, you do not receive the new plan’s full allowance this cycle. You receive the gap between the two, and you pay a prorated charge immediately.

What proration does and does not cover

Proration applies to the money: Descript charges the card on file for the difference, crediting unused time on your current plan toward the new price. It does not apply to the meter.

Why you can’t undo it quickly

Downgrades and billing-cycle changes take effect at the end of the current cycle, without proration, per the same documentation retrieved 19 September 2026. An upgrade bought for one deadline holds until your renewal date.

What an upgrade actually buys you this cycle

Site calculation from Descript’s published figures, 19 September 2026. A Hobbyist account that has spent all 400 monthly credits and upgrades to Creator moves to an 800-credit limit with 400 already counted against it.

Usable this cycle: 400 credits, for the prorated difference between the two plan prices shown above. The upgrade also unlocks bundles, so the same account can then buy more.

A Creator account that has spent all 800 credits and upgrades to Business gains 700 usable credits this cycle, not 1,500.

๐Ÿ” Why It Works This Way: The allowance is a ceiling on cycle usage, not a wallet that refills on purchase. Changing plans raises the ceiling; it does not reset the counter beneath it.

Whether the higher ceiling is worth holding for the rest of the year is a different question โ€” the full cost of each Descript tier works that through.

Finishing the project at zero credits

Some of Descript stops at an empty credit balance and some of it does not. Manual editing, transcription and exports draw on media minutes, not credits, so an empty credit balance does not block them.

Three things reduce the burn on the next cycle, all documented by Descript and retrieved 19 September 2026:

  1. Apply Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words directly rather than asking Underlord to run them โ€” both are capped at 30 credits per file, and Underlord charges for its own reasoning step on top of the tool.
  2. Choose a cheaper generative model where the option is offered, since more advanced models cost more per run.
  3. Re-import existing project files rather than re-uploading them.

โœ… Do This: Before buying anything, check the Usage tab in App Settings to confirm which of the two balances is actually empty. The cheapest route depends entirely on that answer.

๐Ÿงพ Not Tested: We hold no paid Descript subscription, so we have not observed the at-limit state, the top-up purchase flow, or the post-upgrade credit balance first-hand. Every figure above comes from Descript’s published pricing page and help centre, captured 19 September 2026.

FAQ

1. Do Descript AI credits roll over?

No. Unused monthly credits expire at renewal and do not carry into the next cycle, per Descript’s usage documentation, 19 September 2026.

2. Can Hobbyist users buy more credits?

No. Descript’s plan comparison, retrieved 19 September 2026, shows AI credit top-ups excluded on both Free and Hobbyist plans.

3. Does upgrading reset my credit usage?

No. Usage already accumulated this cycle counts toward the new plan’s limits, per Descript’s upgrade documentation retrieved 19 September 2026.

4. How much is the smallest credit top-up?

The smallest AI credit bundle is 350 credits for $35.00, per Descript’s help centre retrieved 19 September 2026.

5. Do top-up credits expire?

Yes. Purchased top-ups expire 12 months after purchase, per Descript’s top-ups documentation retrieved 19 September 2026.

6. Are top-ups refundable?

No. Descript’s top-ups documentation, retrieved 19 September 2026, states that top-up purchases are non-refundable.

7. Are top-up credits shared with my team?

Yes. Top-ups are shared across all members of your Drive and are spent only after the monthly allowance is exhausted.

8. What still works with zero AI credits?

Manual editing, transcription and exports draw on media minutes rather than credits, so an empty credit balance does not block them.

9. Can I downgrade again after upgrading for one project?

Downgrades take effect at the end of your current billing cycle, without proration, per Descript’s upgrade documentation, 19 September 2026.

What to do next

Pick by deadline, not by price. If this is a one-off spike and you’re on Creator or Business, a bundle clears it without committing you past this cycle. If you’re on Hobbyist, the upgrade is your only paid route โ€” and it gives you the gap between the two allowances, not a fresh start.
