Canva License Types and Exactly What Each One Allows
Canva license types follow the content, not your plan: one Pro license covers one design, and three Canva pages disagree on who gets popular music.

Table of Contents
Canva’s licenses attach to the content in a design, not to your plan. As read on 17 October 2026, Canva’s Content License Agreement covers Free and Pro content; Education accounts may use Pro content only non-commercially; and Popular Music has its own agreement allowing personal use only, with no one-off purchase. Canva Pro, US$144 a year before tax that day on Canva’s US pricing page, issues Pro licenses automatically.
๐๏ธ Pricing verified 17 October 2026. Software pricing changes frequently โ confirm on the vendor’s site before purchasing.

Which Canva license covers your design

Each item in a design carries its own license; your plan doesn’t set it.
Canva’s Content License Agreement, read 17 October 2026, binds you when you export a design containing library Content, and sorts that Content into Free, Pro, Branded and Education categories.
Licenses follow the content, not the plan
The agreement names licenses after content categories, never after a plan such as Business or Enterprise. Your plan changes only how a Pro license reaches you: paid per design on Free, or issued on export with a paid subscription. Plan prices are in our record of what each Canva plan costs and refunds.
How to read an item’s license label
Canva’s licensing explainer, read 17 October 2026, marks Pro items with a crown icon. Track details read “Commercial use allowed” for stock music, or “Popular music โฌ Only personal use allowed” (Popular Music agreement ยง2).
Free and Pro content licenses compared
Both Free and Pro content may be used commercially, including advertising, social posts and resale prints (ยง5, read 17 October 2026).

| License term | Free Content (agreement read 17 Oct 2026) | Pro Content (agreement read 17 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | Perpetual, worldwide (ยง2) | Perpetual, worldwide (ยง3) |
| Designs covered | Any number (ยง6) | One design per license (ยง3) |
| Download the item on its own | Allowed (ยง6) | Not allowed (ยง3) |
| Templates sold for use outside Canva | Allowed (ยง6) | Not allowed; Canva templates only (ยง5) |
| How you get it | Free at export (ยง4) | Paid per design on Free; included with a subscription (ยง4) |
What a One Design Use License means
Each Pro Content License covers one design. A Magic Resized copy counts as a new design, so Free users pay again and subscribers get a new license on export (ยง4). The agreement grants these licenses perpetually but never mentions cancellation by name.
How Free users license Pro content
Canva’s watermark help page, read 17 October 2026, says Free users select Remove watermarks on an element to buy it for that design only. Neither that page nor the agreement states the per-element price, so we don’t quote one.
AI-generated library content
AI-generated library items are marked Free or Pro and follow that license (ยง3A). Storage, Brand Kits and AI uses are covered in what else Free and Pro gate beyond licenses.
What no Canva license lets you do
These limits in Canva’s agreement, read 17 October 2026, apply to Free and Pro content on every plan.
Logos and trademarks
Library Content can’t form part of a trademark or business name, except fonts (ยง9.2). Canva’s licensing explainer, read the same day, also allows simple shapes and lines; the agreement’s text doesn’t.
Selling merchandise and templates
Merchandise is allowed when Content sits inside your design, not on its own (ยง9.5). Templates containing Pro content can be sold only for use on Canva (ยง5).
Websites and ebooks: the 480,000-pixel cap
Unedited Pro Content online is capped at 480,000 total pixels per file, such as 600 ร 800, under ยง5A of the agreement as read 17 October 2026. Sites published through Canva and Canva-hosted embeds are exempt.
Editorial use needs the credit “ยฉ[Contributor’s Name] via Canva.com” (ยง9.9); Canva’s explainer says its licenses otherwise need no attribution.
โ ๏ธ This Costs You: Under ยง10, Canva may suspend or terminate an account that breaks the license without notice. An account terminated that way loses its rights to Content and designs and forfeits fees paid.
Canva Education license: free but non-commercial
No: a Canva Education account may use Pro content only for educational, non-commercial purposes (ยง8, read 17 October 2026).
Who qualifies
Canva’s eligibility guidelines, read 17 October 2026, limit Canva Education to certified K-12 teachers in current roles and accredited K-12 schools and districts. Exclusions are covered in who gets Canva free as a student.
The commercial-use line
For paid work, the agreement says to create a separate Canva account (ยง8). Canva’s licensing explainer, read the same day, says to create a second team in your account instead. The agreement is what you accept on export, so the separate account is the safer instruction.
Education Content is a separate label
Items badged “Resource” are Education Content, which Canva offers in the Free or Pro library for educational, non-commercial use only (ยง5C).
Canva music licenses: stock music vs popular music
Canva’s three pages on Popular Music, read 17 October 2026, disagree on which plans get it.
Who gets Popular Music: Canva’s pages disagree
| Canva page | Lists as included (read 17 Oct 2026) | Lists as excluded (read 17 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Popular Music agreement ยง2, last updated 31 Jan 2025 | Pro, Nonprofits, Teams of 10 or fewer, Education | Free gets a 30-second preview only (ยง5) |
| Help page: add popular music | Pro, Education, Teams of 10 or fewer | Nonprofits, Teams of 11 or more, Free |
| Canva Pro music page FAQ | Pro, Education | Free, Business, Nonprofits |
On Nonprofits or Business, assume no access until tracks appear for you. Seat costs are in Canva Business per-person pricing.
Stock music: commercial, with ad limits
Pro stock music may run in online ads, including YouTube pre-, mid- and post-roll, but not in TV, cinema, radio, podcast or billboard ads, and can’t be remixed (ยง7).
Popular Music: personal use on four platforms
The Popular Music agreement allows personal or internal organizational use only, published on Canva, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or TikTok (ยง4). Ads, sponsored or gifted posts and monetization are barred (ยง6.1).
Canva’s help page caps a track at 60 seconds in a design, as read 17 October 2026. The agreement’s territory list covers Australia, Canada, the UK, the US and 19 European countries, and bars VPN use (ยง3); the help page’s list omits Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
Matching the license to your project
Canva’s agreement, read 17 October 2026, applies the most restrictive category in a design to the whole design: Education Content, then Branded, then Pro, then Free (ยง1.3).
Selling designs or doing client work
You may transfer a design to one client under a written agreement binding them to these terms, and you stay liable (ยง4A). Promotional and resale print runs carry no quantity limit (ยง5). If client work needs a team plan, compare Canva’s plan-by-plan pricing.
Teaching plus a side business
Keep paid work in a separate account, as the Education section above explains.
Video with music, branded or Disney elements
A promo video can use Pro stock music but not Popular Music. Branded Content is personal use only unless its source info says otherwise (ยง5B); Disney templates are personal or educational only (ยง5D).
โ Do This: Re-read the agreement before a large print or client job. Canva’s policy archive, read 17 October 2026, lists earlier versions dated 4 February 2025, 18 September 2025, 20 March 2026 and 14 April 2026.
๐งพ Not Tested: We exported no designs under any of these licenses. Popular Music isn’t licensed in India, where our team works, and Canva Education needs a K-12 teaching credential. Everything here comes from Canva’s public documents, read 17 October 2026.
